Let the Dreamer Dream: the Art of Pete Revonkorpi aka Pesare(1)

How should I prepare myself to speak to the children about Pete Revonkorpi’ s art?  I guess the best way to do this is to get some sleep, a sleep full of dreams, because the artist’s world is populated by all sorts of characters who are either getting ready to sleep or sleeping already. In his art you will also find all kinds of artists (painters, poets, musicians), gardeners, fishermen or sailors.

After a good night’s sleep, in which I was a dreamer like many of Pesare’s characters,  I went to see the kids  to tell them about this 37-year-old Finnish artist who illustrates book for children and was kind enough to allow me to create a powerpoint presentation about his art.

I show the children the first slide, that with The Twins, inspired by da Vinci’s La belle ferronnière. A boy(V.) and a girl( D.) immediately recognize Leonardo’s painting from my previous lessons.

I ask the children to notice the resemblances and the differences between the twins. According to F. one is brighter than the other. The reason F. reached this conclusion is the fact that the former has a green tree in her head, while the latter has a leafless tree. Another child (V.) notices that one shows her finger to the other, as if the first one were guilty of something.

I show them that the lady on the left has a ring, while the lady on the right is pointing her index finger towards her twin’s ring. What does this mean? That one is married and the other is not and the not married one wishes to be married and is envious of the married one(according to S.). Another kid believes that one of the twins has six fingers. 🙂

The next slide about the Grown Ups shows us several characters with their head dug in the ground and their feet in the air, in a snowing, dull background. Their gloomy clothes suggest that the adults lost the imagination and creativity typical to children and aren’t able to enjoy the snow like children do. This image is so different from that called Snowflakes in which a little girl thinks that the snowflakes take the shape of ballerinas! One of the children from my class thinks that the grown ups in the second slide have died. In a way, he is right. Pesare’s adults seem more like living dead.

 

In the slide about the Knight, S. sees a kid in his garden, riding a puppy. S. gives another interpretation of the drawing as well, that the kid dreams because he has pyjamas and the Moon can be seen in the background. Two children start to argue about the dragon. One of them thinks there is no dragon at all in the picture, but a dinosaur, because if it had been a dragon it would have had wings. The other child  thinks that the dragons’wings are behind the castle. V. even thinks that the captive princess shouts: “Heeelp! Save me from this dragon!”

 

In Fishing from a Paperboat, V. sees four children. According to him, three of them have fishing rods and fish a book, a tyre and a painter’s palette. We  argue a little about the tyre,  I believe it is a camera, but I am not sure. My interpretation of the picture is that we see the fishers of the arts in it, each child is fishing for the art that he/she will later practice. The Head teacher has his own interpretation of the image,  that we can see some kids who are at the beginning of their lives and who choose the field they will latter approach. As for S., he shares with us his ecological approach, that people threw a lot of garbage in the water and that these four children try to fight against pollution.

 

Analysing the girl from Going to Sleep, a girl (D.) thinks she resembles Rapunzel and that she carries a suitcase full of toys. As for Morning, F. thinks that the girl awakens from the world of the dreams and that the flowers at her feet suggest she had a nice dream.

 

After analysing all these pictures I show the kids two of Pesare’ s works that inspired me to write two poems. One of them is Knitter, which was the starting point in writing the poem The Little Knit Slippers Are Ready! and the other one is Dreamwalker, which made me write the text Aspiration.

Visătorului îi stă bine cu visul:arta lui Pesare (1)

Cum să mă pregătesc să le vorbesc copiilor despre arta lui Pete Revonkorpi(Pesare)? Cum altfel decât printr-un somn bun, plin de vise, căci lumea lui e populată de tot felul de personaje care se pregătesc să doarmă sau care sunt deja cufundate în somn, dar și de artiști( pictori, poeți, muzicieni), grădinari, pescari sau navigatori.

După o noapte în care am împărtășit cu personajele lui Pesare statutul de visător cu acte-n regulă, merg la cei mici să le vorbesc despre acest artist finlandez de 37 de ani care ilustrează cărți pentru copii și care a avut amabilitatea să-mi permită să realizez un powerpoint despre lucrările domniei sale.

Prima planșă pe care le-o arăt copiilor este cea cu gemenele inspirate de Frumoasa soție de fierar pe care un băiat( V.) și o fată (D.)o recunosc imediat.

Îi invit pe copii să observe asemănările și deosebirile dintre cele două femei gemene. Potrivit lui F. una e mai deșteaptă și alta mai puțin deșteaptă, având ca argument diferența între copacul verde și cel uscat. Un alt copil (V.) observă că una arată spre cealaltă, de parcă ea ar fi vinovată de ceva.

Le arăt inelul de pe deget al femeii din stânga și faptul că cea din dreapta își îndreaptă degetul arătător către inelul celei din stânga. Ce ar însemna aceasta? Că una e măritată și alta nu și cea care nu e măritată ar vrea să fie și ea și are ciudă pe cealaltă (S.) Unui alt copil i se pare că una dintre gemene are șase degete. 🙂

Planșa următoare numită Adulții arată mai multe personaje cu capul în pământ și cu picioarele în aer, într-un decor tern, în care ninge. Hainele mohorâte sugerează că adulții și-au pierdut imaginația și creativitatea copiilor și că sunt incapabili să se mai bucure de ninsoare ca aceștia. Ce diferență e între această imagine în care ninge și cea numită Fulgi de zăpadă, de exemplu, în care o fetiță își imaginează că fulgii iau forma unor balerine! Unul dintre copii e chiar de părere că adulții din planșa a doua au murit. Într-un fel cel mic are dreptate, Adulții lui Pesare sunt un fel de morți în viață.

În planșa Cavalerul , S. vede un  un copil care e în grădina lui, călare pe un cățel sau care visează pentru că văd că este în pijamale și în desen este și o lună.  Doi copii încep să se contrazică în privința dragonului. Unul e de părere că nu e vorba de niciun dragon, ci de un dinozaur, pentru că nu are aripi, alt copil crede că aripile dragonului sunt după castel. V. își imaginează chiar și o replică a prințesei captive: ajutooor! Scapă-mă de acest dragon! 

În Pescuitul dintr-o barcă de hârtie, V. vede patru copii, dintre care trei au undițe și pescuiesc o carte, o vioară, o roată, un creion și o paletă de pictor.  Eu sunt de părere că unul dintre pescari prinde un aparat foto, nu o roată și că în această ilustrație îi vedem pe pescarii artelor, fiecare pescuind arta pe care o va practica.  Domnul director vine cu propria interpretare, că în desen sunt niște copii la început de drum care își aleg un domeniu pe care-l vor aborda ca adulți: unul va picta, altul va scrie, altul va cânta la vioară. La rândul său S. vine cu o viziune ecologică,  că oamenii au aruncat multe gunoaie în apă, iar acești patru copii au încercat să lupte împotriva poluării.

Analizând fata din Mersul la culcare, o fetiță, D., e de părere că aceasta seamănă cu Rapunzel și că are un geamantan plin cu jucării, iar despre lucrarea Dimineața, F. spune că fata se trezește din lumea viselor, și că florile de la picioare sunt un indiciu că ea a visat frumos.

Și dacă tot am vorbit despre vise și visuri, îi întreb pe copii dacă știu să facă distincția între sensul celor două cuvinte. V. spune că  visuri înseamnă ce vrei să te faci, ce vrei să se întâmple în viitor și că visele sunt proiectări imaginare ale creierului.(!)

 

După analiza ilustrațiilor individuale le arăt două lucrări de-ale lui Pesare care m-au inspirat în scrierea a două poezii. Una dintre ele este Knitter, care a fost punctul de plecare al poeziei Ciorăpeii-s gata!, și cealaltă e Dreamwalker, care m-a determinat să scriu textul  Aspirație:
